Lesson 8: Mindfulness & Meditation – Growing Our “Focus Power”

Age Group: 8-year-olds
Duration: 45–60 minutes

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand that meditation is like “exercise for the mind” to help us focus and feel calm.
  2. Practice simple mindfulness activities to strengthen attention.
  3. Connect mindfulness to Māori values like hauora (well-being) and mana (inner strength).

Materials

  • A soft toy kiwi or tūī (NZ bird) for storytelling.
  • “Mindful Breathing” worksheet (with pōhutukawa flower image).
  • A “calm jar” (jar with water, glitter, and green food dye for NZ forest vibe).
  • Natural objects: Smooth stones, leaves, or feathers.
  • Art supplies for creating “Mindfulness Reminder Stones.”

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction: Meet Koro the Kiwi (10 mins)

  • Story: “Koro the Kiwi gets distracted digging for bugs! He learns to pause and focus with his ‘mind muscles.’ How? Let’s find out!”
  • Ask: “When do YOU feel distracted? How does it feel to focus?”
  • Māori Connection: Introduce hauora – “A healthy mind (hinengaro) helps us feel strong!”

2. Activity: “Breathing like a Pōhutukawa Tree” (10 mins)

  • Mindful Breathing:
    • Give out flower worksheets. “Pretend your breath is the wind – breathe in (smell the flowers), breathe out (blow the petals gently).”
    • Practice for 1–2 minutes. Discuss: “How does your body feel after?”
  • Calm Jar Demo: Shake the jar. “Watch the glitter settle, like calming your busy thoughts.”

3. Mindful Adventure: “Forest Explorer” (15 mins)

  • Guided Imagery:
    • “Close your eyes. Imagine walking in a NZ forest. What do you hear? Smell? Feel?”
    • Pass around natural objects (stones, leaves). “Focus on how they feel – rough, smooth, light?”
  • Movement Break: Pretend to be a tūī bird – move slowly and silently, listening for “sounds” (e.g., a bell).

4. Craft: Make a “Mindfulness Reminder Stone” (15 mins)

  • Decorate Stones: Paint or draw symbols (hearts, koru, stars) on smooth stones.
    • “When you hold this stone, take 3 deep breaths to calm your mind!”
  • Share: “Where will you keep your stone? At home? In your school bag?”

5. Conclusion: Karakia for a Calm Heart (5 mins)

  • Recap: “Just like Koro the Kiwi, we can use our ‘mind muscles’ to focus and feel strong!”
  • Karakia: Say a simple Māori blessing, e.g., “Kia tau te mauri” (Let peace settle within us).
