Lesson 7: Discovering Our Purpose – our guide like the Matariki Stars

Age Group: 8-year-olds
Duration: 45–60 minutes

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand that purpose means having goals that help ourselves and others.
  2. Explore how everyone (and everything!) has a role, from plants to people.
  3. Connect personal goals to Māori values like whanaungatanga (relationships) and kaitiakitanga (caring for the environment).

Materials

  • A large drawing of a pōhutukawa tree (with blank leaves).
  • Star cutouts (for Matariki connection).
  • “Purpose Paddles” (paper waka paddles).
  • Art supplies: Colours, glue, natural materials (leaves, feathers).

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction: The Purpose of a Pōhutukawa Tree (10 mins)

  • Story: “Meet Pua the Pōhutukawa! Her purpose is to grow strong roots, give shade, and feed tūī birds. What’s YOUR purpose?
    • Ask: “Why do bees collect nectar? Why do waves touch the shore?”
  • Māori Connection: Link to Te Ao Māori – “Everything in nature has a mauri (life force) and purpose.”

2. Activity: “Matariki Stars of Purpose” (15 mins)

  • Star Craft: Each child decorates a star with:
    • Personal Goal: “I will help my whānau by…”
    • Community Goal: “I will care for our beach by…”
  • Share: Hang stars on a “Matariki Sky” poster. “Just like Matariki stars guide us, our goals light up our path!”

3. Waka Journey Role-Play (15 mins)

  • Set Up: Use chairs as a waka. Each child holds a “Purpose Paddle” with a goal (e.g., “Share toys,” “Plant a tree”).
    • Guide: “To reach our island (goal), we must paddle TOGETHER! What happens if we drop a paddle (forget our purpose)?”
  • Discuss: “How do our goals help our waka (community) sail smoothly?”

4. Purpose Tree Craft (10 mins)

  • Create: Add paper leaves to the pōhutukawa tree. On each leaf, write/draw:
    • Individual Purpose: “I will practice reading.”
    • Family Purpose: “I will set the table.”
    • Earth Purpose: “I will recycle.”
  • Key Idea: “Like the pōhutukawa, our purposes grow and help others!”

5. Conclusion: Karakia for Purpose (5 mins)

  • Recap: “We all have a role – like stars, trees, and waka paddles. Let’s shine bright!”
  • Karakia: “Whakataka te hau ki te uru, whakataka te hau ki te tonga…” (Māori karakia for unity and strength).
